Frequently Asked Questions about a vegan / plant-based diet
Tofu, tempeh, seitan, chickpeas, black beans, lentils, kidney beans, cannelini beans, edamame are all high in protein that can be great substitutes for a main source of protein in a meal to replace meat products. Other plant-based protein sources include green peas, spelt, teff, nutritional yeast, whole grains, quinoa, mock meats, soy products, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, nuts, and vegan protein powder.
Most people ‘go vegan’ for ethical, health or environmental reasons, not because they dislike the taste of meat. Therefore there are many mock meat products that can be used to replace the taste, texture and appearance of animal meat products without the cruelty involved.
Vegans who miss the taste, texture etc. of eggs in a savoury breakfast or meal often substitute eggs with tofu, chickpeas, chickpea flour or a vegan egg replacer.
There are plenty of vegan egg replacement options (as listed above) when it comes to cooking and baking that can all serve the different purposes such as binding, thickening, coating, leavening or emulsifying ingredients.
These days there is a wide variety of plant-based milk options to choose from at the supermarket or DIY at home such as soy, rice, oat, almond and hemp. (See more milk alternatives listed previously above)
Nutritional yeast, cashew cheese and store-bought dairy free cheese products made from soy, vegetable oils or nuts are common cheese replacements for people eating a vegan/plant-based diet.
